Amigos de la Tierra

Friends of the Earth International (FoEI) was founded in 1971 and constitutes one of the largest international federations of national environmental organisations.
The organisation is independent from political, ethnic, religious or commercial interests. In 1994, the federation had 54 members. All of them are autonomous and have their own working methods and structures. They act as pressure groups in their countries and have often created federations of regional and local groups.
The main goal of the FoEI federation is the organisation of common activities. Every year, the members come together during the Annual General Meeting. During the year, the organisation is directed by an Executive Committee, which is assisted by the International Secretariat.
A Common Vision:
Friends of the Earth International (FoEI), a federation of national environmental NGOs, bases its work on four fundamental principles:
1) Environmental problems transcend political and geographical borders, and must be resolved at the international level. The solutions should not be left to governments alone. FoEI member groups raise awareness of the problems, while at the same time proposing political and economic solutions.
2) Cooperation with other organisations, and particularly with other environmental NGOs, is essential in reaching our common goals. Thus, FoEI played a central role in the creation of the Environmental Liaison Centre International (ELCI) in Nairobi in the 1970s. In addition, FoEI played a key role in the campaign against tropical rainforest destruction in the past decade.
3) Environmental, social, economic and political problems are linked. For example, ill-planned economic ‘development’ programmes and inequitable relations between countries in the international trade arena have disasterous consequences for the environment.
4) Concrete alternatives to current environmentally-damaging policies and practices do exist. Such changes require fundamental changes in consumption and production patterns.
